Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Despite these recessionary times, on any given night at Ho Wong the tables are packed with what appear to be parents out on date nights, Chinese families out on the town and any number of other regular fans. The décor is cosmopolitan but the atmosphere is very traditionally Chinese and service is formal. At first glance the menu appears to consist largely of familiar old-school Chinese dishes, ribs, prawns, crispy duck and so on. But search a little harder and you find a few gems such as mashed prawns wrapped in tender slices of aubergine – a choice hidden deep in the seafood section. The crowd-pleasing crispy duck is immaculately cooked and shredded with tremendous skill and the pak choi in garlic are perfect too. The pre-made desserts are only for those who look for more than a simple jasmine tea. The bill may come out on the pricey side but it’s worth it for the city’s best full-on Chinese night out.

  • High point: Shredded duck
  • Low point: As much as one might like it, prices make it difficult to justify frequent visits

I nearly booked but the fact it sells Shark Fin Soup did stop me.

How can anything good be written about this restaurant? IT SELLS SHARK FIN SOUP!! It is unethical and damaging to a vital marine species and numerous ecosystems! Has humanity lost its moral compass?

Fantastic food, attentive service, and lovely surroundings. Have never been let down by the food, seems to get better every time.
