Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

A huge welcoming smile on arrival is the first indication of the kind of cheerful experience that is eating at The Raj. With prices on Sunday to Thursday nights slashed to what they were at the famous curry house back in 1983, rather large smiles appear on the faces of diners too. This kind of special deal also means that the place is packed, with tables being set and reset several times. Starters and main courses include established favourites such as the ever popular tikka, bhuna, sheekh kebab and samosa, while some nifty things are done with nuts in the potatoes with cashews, the spiced chicken with peanut sauce and the nut roast – crunchy textures are moistened with a squeeze of lemon and complemented by coriander salad. Wafts of fresh coconut come from one of the house specialities – aromatic chicken, cooked to medium hot perfection with green chillies, grated coconut and coconut milk. Of the lamb specialities, gosht Hindustani is certainly competent, but the gosht papani, with its marinade of chilli, garlic, ginger, tomato and cinnamon, is an even more robust and satisfying dish.

  • High point: Cobra beer on draught
  • Low point: Groups having fun on a night out can be very noisy

1. Bella, Edinburgh – 24 July 2008, 8:12pmReport

I am a little disappointed by the Raj. We used to go there regularly and bought a take-away every weekend.

However, recently I was hospitalised for three days with food poisoning after eating a small amount of a lamb pasanda, which seemed not to have had too many spices added. I called them at the time and they said they would give another one free next time. I was taken to the hospital during the night by ambulance. They were informed that I was in hospital, but not even a phone call from them - or a visit - and they knew our address.
