Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Stationed above the banks of the Water of Leith, Lancers Brasserie is a popular standby with Stockbridgers looking for a decent, if unchallenging, curry. The adequate mains choice is boosted by a more than usually extensive wine list chosen with a careful eye on the menu. Mains include a rather underseasoned ginger murgh chicken and a lean and tender lamb methi ghosh, although this too suffers from a lack of oomph (and fenugreek). Sabzi vegetarian side orders are better, with a sweet and fresh-tasting sag aloo a major improvement on the rather insipid mains, and among desserts a creamy and generous almond kulfi ends the meal on a high. The décor is not designed to foster intimacy, with lights turned up high over a sparse interior and car-dealership blinds festooning the large glass windows. Still, fresh-cut roses on the tables are a nice touch and in general presentation is impeccable, with staff well versed in their customers’ needs. Just not one for spice-fiends, perhaps.

  • High point: Pacey service from diligent staff
  • Low point: Oily and tasteless mushroom bhaji

Reviews of Lancers Brasserie (5 Hamilton Place, Edinburgh)

2. Pavithra Sarma, Edinburgh – 28 April 2010, 12:52pmLancers BrasserieReport

This is one of the worst places serving North Indian cuisine in Edinburgh. The food was quite oily and not at all authentic and the presentation even less so. We didn't relish the food at all. The delivery, however, was very prompt. We won't be ordering takeout from here again.
