Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Ideally situated for starving students, the long-established Kebab Mahal plays to its strengths as a restaurant-takeaway serving good value, no-frills food in bountiful quantities. Although technically they take reservations, the process tends to be hit and miss. Instead, wait in line to grab a table and expect to get friendly with your neighbours once seated. The atmosphere is convivial as takeaway customers stream in for pizza and kebabs as well as more customary Indian fare. Side dishes include chicken pakora on the bone and large portobello mushrooms in a pleasantly fresh, buttery batter. The mains list is distinctly oriented towards carnivores, although the savoury, warming vegetable biryani is a good bet for veggies, even if the diced vegetables look suspiciously processed. The chicken madras doesn't taste particularly home-made either, with chunks of meat floating in a bland sauce. A deliciously thick, sweet lassi, however, is a grand accompaniment to the avalanche-like portions (there's no alcohol licence). A filling feed in unpretentious surroundings.

  • High point: Delicious, fresh raita and hearty portions
  • Low point: Hit or miss dishes

Reviews of Kebab Mahal (7 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh)

This is probably one of Edinburgh's best Indian, if not the best! It is a very modest take away so maybe not the best choice for a romantic dinner, but the food is EXCELLENT and the prices are as well.

A friend has been recommending me the place for ages and one day she finally took me there and now I know what she meant! seriously, the best curry in town! :)
