Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Having undergone a makeover in 2008, the white tablecloths, lace curtains and doilies that once gave Ann Purna the air of a 1950s living room have been replaced by an unfussy but smart, contemporary décor. The cosy St Patrick’s Square restaurant still draws an enthusiastic crowd of regulars and passing trade, including students attracted by comparatively cheap vegetarian dishes, set menus and thalis. Starters are perhaps the most ambitious area of the menu: highlights include a substantial plate of steamed green patra leaves suffed with gram flour and fried in batter, and crunchy sev puri filled with onion, diced potatoes and coriander and topped with light chick pea noodles. Mains are a little disappointing in comparison. Mater reingna is a tasty enough mix of aubergine, peas, potato, chopped mixed nuts, fresh tomatoes and garlic but the mixed vegetable korma combines sweetcorn, carrots and peas with almonds, coconut milk and sugar to create an almost unbearably sweet dish with a taste reminiscent of rice pudding. It’s worth ordering one of the thalis just to try the range of dishes, however. Service is chatty and fairly informal and the BYOB option can mean an exceptionally good value evening’s dining.

  • High point: Great value set menus
  • Low point: The sickly sweet korma

Having ate here last night and after reading these reviews felt I had to say my experience. I have ate here before a few months ago and had a fantastic time then, on reflect of last night I have to stress please go and try for yourself. Service excellent, food divine, I'm a veggie and have travelled the world the Indian veg served here is right at the top of my favourite places to eat. Place was very clean staff really friendly food on time and delicious we were a group of six and didnt have any complaints, owner was lovely and very informative on different dishes my friends were not sure about. Will be arranging a staff night out here and am confident we'll enjoy ourselves.

I had possibly the worst meal that I have had in 12 years of living in Edinburgh last weekend at Ann Purna. The table was dirty, there were used drinks glasses everywhere, we had to wait over an hour and when the (warm not hot) undersized portions finally came we didn't get what we ordered, despite being billed for it. It took us three of four goes to get some tap water. They seemed to be constantly taking more and more customers in without recognising that they didn't have the resources to cope. I won't be going back.

Very disappointed with our visit last night. We had to ask to order drinks, then ask again to order food. Our food took an hour to come and the rice was cold. When we complained about the length of time it took we were told that they only had one chef. No-one told us before hand. The service was very poor, too, with staff wandering around apparently doing nothing and appeared to be deliberately avoiding eye contact with customers.

Very disappointed to have returned here after a long absence to find the old owners have moved on. The pooris for starter tasted good, and the Thali was average. We were ill shortly after leaving, which raises questions of the rice of having been badly reheated and not fresh. I called the restaurant a few days later and am yet to hear back from them. As Abba say "Take a chance"....and hopefully you don't suffer the same fate!

Had a superb meal here, good food served by friendly staff and (I think) owner. Came here after our last meal at the Kalpna was very disappointing. Certainly some of the best vegetarian cooking I have ever eaten. Two small points - took ages to get the bill at the end of the meal (restaurant very busy by then!) and the toilets could do with a bit of a spruce up. Otherwise highly recommended.

This place was good. The food was well presented. We went for the Thali - a bit of everything. Subtle flavours. This does not imply they were insipid! Reasonably priced. Prompt service. We would definitely recommend it.

Fantastic vegie indian, small and friendly. Gujerati cuisine is a pleasant change from the usual Indian menus.
