It's hard to believe, but Broughton Street's Blue Moon Café, located in the heart of Edinburgh’s gay scene, has been a lively social hub for over 30 years. A few things have altered over time. The Broughton Street wing is now a separate diner (Hamburger Heaven, see North American) and the basement now hosts Deep Blue bar, but essentially the recipe remains unchanged. There are two cosy rooms, one with a fire (not real, in case you were wondering), and one with a small bar, both plentifully furnished with artworks. The menu offers hearty, homely and familiar dishes such as nachos, lasagne, steak pie, chimichangas and a couple of curries. Portions can err on the mammoth side, wth slabs of lasagne coming garnished with fries or garlic bread. Burgers are a good choice with well-seasoned flavoursome beef, although accompanying fries are a wee bit pale and limp. Desserts are similarly comforting and calorific with a nicely caramel-y sticky toffee pudding or giant creamy mound of sweet banoffee pie to finish you off.
- High point: Friendly pit-stop for coffee and comfort food
- Low point: Menu could do with an update here and there

Blue Moon CaféReport -
The Blue Moon Café is consistently one of the most friendly and relaxed places to enjoy a spot of food in Edinburgh. There is a genuine warmth to the place which is why it has such a loyal following of customers.
The menu has changed over the years, but I would recommend the homemade burgers which are simple, tasty and well executed or the excellent homemade macaroni which are old favourites.
