Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Having changed hands and been given a new lease of life in early 2011, this City Centre Italian is already proving hard to beat due to the combination of excellent food and charming service. The modern rectangular dining area gleams with sparkling glassware, shiny wooden floors and dark brown furniture, while half a dozen booths provide intimate dining for couples below the dimmed spotlights twinkling from the ceiling. The small menu contains a some of the classics – a starter portion of spaghetti bolognese tastes authentic with a mixture of quality pork and beef enveloped with rich sauce full of sweet tomato, basil and red wine. Follow with an impressive dish of pan fried monkfish – the fish is wrapped in Parma ham, keeping it moist and meaty, sitting on top of creamy saffron risotto. The partially open kitchen allows the pizza chef to take centre stage as he tosses his dough, sprinkles the toppings and places in their real wood-fired pizza oven – the difference this makes to the flavour needs to be tasted to be believed.

  • High point: Excellent meat and fish dishes
  • Low point: Early days mean things might change

2. roz, glasgow – 29 October 2009, 10:04pm5 starsO Sole MioReport

After visiting Osolemio on the 22nd of October for a birthday celebration I left full, satisfied and eager to return!!!!!

The resturant was cosy and had a fantastic ambience!

I ordered the Minestrone packed with fresh, chunky vegetables and hearty pasta, sprinkled generously with parmesan cheese! HEAVEN!!!!

Next I ordered Veal Sophia Loren! Now this really was special! I Loved it!!

The dish was served by silver service! How impressing! I only know of hotels that still practice this in Glasgow!!!

After this I must admit i was stuffed but looking at the dessert menu I had to have an Italian classic - Lemoncello sorbet fantistic.

Throughout my visit the waitresses were fantastic! Even more so on my way to the toilet the Owner who had been slaving away at the real wood oven started a fantastic conversation about his Italian backround and his passion for cooking fresh, hearty, traditional Itallian food!

This is the resturant everyone in Glasgow walks past but hasnt had the chance to go in!

Please pop in you wont be disappointed! I certainly wasn't!!!!!

1. HoneyPB, Glasgow – 29 November 2008, 2:47pmO Sole MioReport

I have no idea when the above review was written but Sole Mio is no longer somewhere anyone human should be eating.

We turned up five minutes early for dinner at 5pm - the place was in darkness and myself and my elderly relative were rudely turned away and told to come back in half an hour. Which we regrettably did....

The wine list was awful - 5 reds in an Italian restaurant? We had the chianti at £20. It wasn't too bad.

The head waiter was cold and unfriendly and burped loudly as he walked past the table. Should have made my escape then.....

The restaurant was cold, the decor old and grubby and the tables were grimy.

I ordered tagliatelle pesto (£7.50) - instead came a runny creamy slop which some basil had been waved near but no pine had even been introduced.... my relative ordered the veal (£13). Funny how veal tastes like pork - except it was pork!!!! The sauce was the same slop I had on my pasta and the vegetables were soggy and obviously from a frozen packet.

What a disappointment. Whoever runs this place should be ashamed. It has seriously gone down hill since the last time I was there in 2005. They had a cheek to add on a service charge! Avoid at all costs.
