On the busy road south into Shawlands, Buongiorno is a family-run and family-friendly café and restaurant with a lively atmosphere and a reputation as a neighbourhood favourite. The relatively small space is often full of convivial chatter from diners and the clanging of pots and pans from the busy open kitchen. A wide-raging menu offers all of the usual suspects: lasagne, pizza and a variety of pasta shapes and sauces. Daily specials can include seafood selections and tender steaks. A wholesome and meaty minestrone makes for a hearty starter, while an insalata caprese has thick soft slices of mozzarella and tomatoes drizzled with a punchy basil-peppered olive oil. Among the pasta options, spaghetti carbonara is rich, creamy and packed with garlic. A wobbling egg sits in a nest of baby spinach atop a stone-baked pizza with a perfectly charred crispy base and a sweet tomato sugo. The staff are cheekily friendly, in keeping with the buzzing local restaurant vibe, and colourful head chef 'Roberto the Great' will often treat diners to a touch of Elvis.
- High point: Friendly family favourite
- Low point: Tables quite close together
