The River Kelvin is admittedly no Mediterranean. But as far as pleasant waterside spots for dining in Glasgow go, the Big Blue has one of the best of the bunch. It's a boon, especially on those warm, sunny days when tables and chairs are set out the back door of the bar area, beneath Caledonian Crescent, allowing patrons to eat and drink an afternoon away right above the edge of the waterway. The aquatic theme extends inside – not only to the décor but to the food, too. Fat, juicy king prawns come served in white wine, with peppers, chillies and diced tomatoes. For a more adventurous first course, there's calamari fritti – fried squid in batter, with tartar sauce on the side. Smoked haddock risotto makes for a rich, fluffy, flavoursome main course augmented with peas and cherry tomatoes. For those not of a seafood persuasion, tagliatelle pollo e porcini offers mushrooms, onions and peppers in a tomato, basil and cream sauce with pieces of breaded chicken on top. The Big Blue's broad selection of pizzas offers abundant options (fishy toppings or otherwise) and is something of a house speciality.
