Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

From outside this tardis-like attractive former tram shelter, has more tables than you'd imagine, and a cosy atmosphere when busy, which it frequently is. The ambitious menu is large and starters include crêpes, salads and bruschettas as well as starter portions of main meals like the king prawns on Stornoway black pudding atop a home-made sun-dried tomato potato scone – although the gourmet black pudding dominates this substantial starter, the prawns were cooked to tender perfection in garlic, chilli and lemon oil. The award-winning pizzas include the house calzone – a particular favourite with the regulars. There's pasta aplenty too and specials such as herb-crusted pork fillet with pesto linguine – the tangy basil in the pesto bolstering the herbs in the crust. Ice-cream dominates an unexciting dessert menu, and the zabaglione flavour lacked Marsala wine. The delicious Tuscan beer at 7 per cent abv, however, more than makes up for the tee-total ice-cream. Overall this is a great wee place with a unique character and atmosphere.

  • High point: A great value local
  • Low point: Limited space when busy

7. The Rouger, Glasgow – 6 November 2011, 12:00pmBattlefield RestReport

My wife and I have been to Battlefield Rest twice and both times we found the food to be well cooked with quirky little menu ideas like using haggis with chicken and black pudding with pizza etc. The value is good and menu is adequately sized. The drawbacks are the overcrowding caused by tables being too close together and the staff a bit abrupt. When asked what kind of beer was on offer, the waiter didn't know. He should. He works there. Worth a visit if you can put up with the drawbacks.

The smell of garlic oozing from the battlefield rest almost overcomes the eyesore of the MRSA infested Old Victoria backdrop. Over the years the converter bus shelter has saved many a nausiating date. Its slighlty cramped interior and sweatshop like kitchen creates enough sound and perfume that can overcome even the most awkward foot in mouth first date banter. The cuisine performs the balancing act of producing traditional dishes with rustic appeal , hints of local produce and powerful flavours .The Crepes with smoked haddock , parmesan and bechamel sauce is like a fantastic variation of an omellette Arnold Bennett. The flat breads , specifically the caramelised onion version is particularly good to share and the pasta is always cooked perfectly and in plentiful supply .

In terms of value, the lunch time deals are so cheap you certainly would not make it a first date destination , although it does come with a free glass of wine if you think that might persuade her ? Five pounds gets you a pizza or pasta and a glass of house wine which to be fair is cheaper than Macdonalds and a can of super so I am suprised they do not attract the dregs .

I could not reccomend this place higher , however I would keep away from the meatballs as they are not as good as they should be , order wine by the carafe and enjoy the patter of the italian waiters with glasgow twangs !

One of the best restaurants in Glasgow and a great find on the south side of the city. Delicious Italian food, good atmosphere, warm and cosy feel that's great for the winter month, informal and friendly, with good service.

Went there for dinner on a Saturday night, the place was buzzing, warm and cosy with very friendly staff and a brilliant atmosphere. The menu selection was wonderful, wine beautiful and the food itself fantastic. I will be eating here again, highly recommended.

I always enjoy a visit to the Battlefield Rest. It is rather cramped and you can expect to know your fellow diners fairly well by the time you leave, but it's a pleasant atmosphere with some quirky waiters and good food. The crepes are a must try and the desserts are fantastic. Definitely worth a visit.

I love this place. It is informal, and due to the fact that it isn't too big it always has a great atmosphere as it is always busy. The menu doesn't change very often, but the food is consistently good and a great mix. Some interesting alternative takes on classics - like canneloni haggis, or a pizza with black pudding. The prices are very reasonable for such a good restaurant - part of the reason it is so busy all the time probably.

The tables are close together but there is normally such a constant buzz that you don't need to worry about feeling like your neighbour is able to hear every word you say.

I've been here twice and the first time it was excellent. The 2 course lunch deal is great value. The second time i wasn't impressed with the pasta dish I received. The menu was lacking with choice as far as meaty pastas go. The dish my partner got wasn't anything special either. We both felt very crammed in with hardly any space in between tables.
