Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

Accommodating is the word that best describes this Southside restaurant: parking is very easy and it's located near the Pollokshields East train station, just one stop from Central. Co-owner Giuseppe Di Milta also says that the note on the menu about the chef being 'pleased to prepare any dish not on the menu' is quite serious: if customers call in advance, he can get in the ingredients or, if it's wine, choose the requested bottle from their wide and impressive range. The subdued lighting combined with the quiet location make dining a relaxing, comfortable experience. Service is professional and the dishes are well-presented. A firm Italian favourite, melanzane alla Parmigiana, with layers of aubergine, rich tomato sauce and Parmesan, shows the quality of the kitchen here. That makes one wonder if the pasta in the penne Siciliana is slightly overcooked on purpose, to suit Scottish tastes. From the daily-changing blackboard specials, steak fillet alla Calabrese is tender and the sauce has a kick. To finish, customers can go for the sentimental taste of rum baba, a sometimes undervalued dessert that conjures up images of old-style Italian ice-cream cafés.

  • High point: Warm, welcoming atmosphere
  • Low point: A little off the beaten track
