In 1998, Roman restauranteur Massimo Onorati established this Southside staple, which he now runs with his son Michael. The dated décor may not be a selling point, but what Roma Mia lacks in style, it makes up for in warm, welcoming service and the kind of heartily portioned, traditional cooking which attracts loyal regulars and ex-pats, including the odd footballer. While the menu focuses on dishes native to Massimo's home town, the chef is happy to recreate old favourites on request, provided he has the ingredients. A simple and fresh tasting insalata caprese drizzles basil-infused olive oil over thick wedges of firm, white mozzarella and proper beef tomatoes, while spaghetti all' amatriciana is delicately flavoured and laden with salty pancetta. Profiteroles, or bigné con gelato, are presented in a pretty little pyramid. The choice is bolstered by a daily-changing specials board featuring the freshest of locally sourced meat and fish and special additions to the Italian-only wine list. There's a dearth of vegetarian options on the set lunch and pre-theatre menu, but the restaurant's relaxed 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude extends to an offer of alternative dishes should dietary requirements or tastes not be immediately met.
- High point: Substantial home-style cooking
- Low point: Dated décor

A warm welcome certainly awaits those who go out there way to find this gem of an italian hidden just off pollokshields. We arrived and were immediately greeted with a handshake to myself and a two cheek kiss for my partner.
The ding room itself is plain and simple with propper table cloths and the obligatory snaps of old italia on the wall. The menu is as you would expect in most italian restauarants in the u.k with the usual suspects of antipasto a wide range of pasta and a reasonable selction of meat and fish dishes. We started with a bottle of the house white which at £13.95 was ideal. We ordered the Antipasto Italiano (£7.50) to share which arrived with a selection of fine italian meats, olives and salad all of which was of an excellent standard. To follow i opted for the Cannelloni con Carne (£7.50) while my partner ordered the Linguine alla Puttanesca (£7.50). The two tubes of Cannelloni with melted cheese and a ragu sauce were simply superb, as good as i have had, whilst Linguine was also excellent. A lemon sorbet was ordered to end a wonderful meal. The final bill of £42.00 represented excellent value for the qaulity of food and service. This restaurant is well worth making the trip down South to Darnley Street.
