The Harlequin Group has been serving curries in and around Glasgow for more than 20 years, a sign that its formula works. The Ashoka Southside outlet offers a pleasant, though vaguely conventional, dining experience. The restaurant is cosy and looks like an old-fashioned living room with thick red carpets, soft lighting and dark wooden furniture. The menu is long on the usual dishes - if a bit short in innovation. A combination platter has a medley of pakoras, onion bhajees and tandoori chicken wings, warm and fragrant with a nice crisp batter. Chicken gujiya are spicy spring rolls, filled with minced chicken and served with tangy chickpeas. King prawn jalfrezi has a creamy texture and strong flavours of garlic and ginger, with cashews and almonds giving the dish a nutty finish. For something slightly different, the chicken malwa combines loads of red peppers, spinach leaves and green chillies in a rich stew of garam massala spices and plenty of coriander.
