Eating & Drinking Guide 2009

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2009 – in the shops now or buy online.

The Koh-i-Noor, named after the world’s largest diamond that was gifted to Queen Victoria, first opened on Gibson Street in 1964 before moving to its current location near the Mitchell Library by the M8. Inside it is decorated in warm red and clean cream with lavish Bollywood style, ornate archways, colourful murals and elaborate screens and hangings. The ever-popular buffet (from 12.95 per person) is laid out grandly around a huge central marble fountain. The menu is the product of the restaurant’s 40 years of experience, with house specialties such as tikka bahar - a favourite of the Mughal emperors - sitting next to ‘old favourites’, such as kormas and biryanis, which are cooked in fried rice and served with mint sauce or curried gravy.

  • High point: A Glasgow institution with 40 years of restaurant experience
  • Low point: Overlooks the motorway
