Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

It claims to be Glasgow’s oldest bar and restaurant and set over three levels this venue has retained some of its original grandeur. Set off Argyle Street in a cute wee lane (or via the Argyle Arcade) the bar is the first place you come across. It is traditional and welcoming with mahogany booths and snugs, artefacts on the walls and the odd bookshelf laden with old books. The pub grub you get here is basic but reasonably priced. There’s a range of soup and sandwich combos, a no-fuss kids menu and some pub classics. The steak and kelburn pie looks like it did when you were at school, a nice big portion though. The scotch pie with chips and beans is as simple as it should be. Sloans is more about a meeting place than an eating place though. It’s boisterous with a popular movie night upstairs in the ballroom on a Tuesday, regular quiz nights, a ceilidh every Friday as well as the odd bingo and big band nights.

  • High point: Feels like walking into a warm traditional pub
  • Low point: Food very basic

Breakfast at Tiffany's

(4 stars) 'How do I look?' asks original waif Hepburn in the role of borderline schizophrenic Holly Golightly. 'Very good, I must say I'm amazed,' replies Peppard in the role of frustrated writer and part-time gigolo Paul Varjak in this adaptation from the novel by Truman Capote. The iconic Hepburn has never made neurosis look so good, and while the film may have numerous redeeming features (not least the exquisite cinematography by Franz F Plane and the swinging soundtrack by Henry Mancini), it is she…

Ghostbusters

(4 stars) Three wacky unemployed parapsychologists pursue a little private enterprise as exterminators in spook-infested New York. Of its time but still an enjoyably dated comedy.

GoodFellas

(5 stars) Liotta plays Henry Hill, a real-life mafioso, with De Niro as his mentor in crime. And while the bullets, fists and carving knives fly, Scorsese brings us back to that unavoidable question – yes, it's glamorous and lucrative to live this way, but can anyone really live with the consequences? Winner of BAFTA awards for best film, director and screenplay, and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Joe Pesci.

Anaemic comic horror as a Santa Monica teen falls into bad company in the shape of a mad, bad and dangerous-to-know gang of vampires. Constant MTV visuals make this an altogether resistible affair.

(4 stars) Princess Buttercup is chosen by the nasty Prince Humperdinck to be his bride but her heart belongs to the farm boy Westley. The princess' kidnapping prompts the return of Westley, now a pirate, and launches a series of swashbuckling adventures, after which true love can prevail. William Goldman's heavily ironic fairy tale is given a spirited treatment by the director of Stand By Me and an enthusiastic troupe.

(3 stars) Our Dusty finds himself getting the brush off when he tries out for acting roles. The excuse being that he is too small, too old or too male. One of these he can remedy: he becomes a woman. What a giggle! His cross-dressing leads to some polished comedy but the whole assumption that merely by changing his outward appearance he can become less demanding and temperamental and much more successful, both as an actor and in his private life, is at best ridiculous.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Location Date Tickets
(4 stars) In 1949 LA, the humans live alongside the Toons, cartoon characters working in movies. Animated star Roger Rabbit hires private dick Hoskins to keep tabs on his wife, but he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the future of Toontown itself. An amazing technical achievement for the interaction of cartoons and live action, this box office winner spoofs the film noir genre while milking the Tex Avery-style cartoon violence for all it's worth.
