The sentiments of the 'small is beautiful' saying are certainly supported by Glasgow's various Wee Curry Shops. The newest one, opened towards the end of 2007 in Byres Road, is the latest tiny jewel in the crown of the empire of its parent group, Mother India. So far, it has managed to meet the high standards set by the other two outlets. (One is just minutes away and the other in Garnethill is close to Cowcadden underground.) It's decorated in shades of dark red and brown, and the atmosphere is cosy and intimate with fewer than 40 covers. Diners can sit downstairs on street level or on a mezzanine where the chefs, in the kitchen directly below, can be spied preparing dishes. What stands out most at any Wee Curry Shop is just how fresh everything tastes, from the massala fish – haddock marinated in yoghurt, tandoori spices and mustard seeds – to the mushroom and prawn poori, cooked in a sweet chilli sauce and wrapped in a fluffy pancake. Almost half the main courses are suitable for vegetarians, with dishes such as mutter panir – Indian cheese cooked with green peas and shallots. Seasoned to perfection with just the right amount of kick, the roast chicken marinated with tomatoes, mustard oil, garlic and smoked paprika is a great choice for meat-eaters.
