Dragon Way is certainly not your run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. Yes, the friendly staff serve up generous portions of shredded duck rolls and sesame prawn toast, spicy Lar Chee beef and slightly-less-spicy Cheung Bau chicken. And yes, you can get a beer with that. There, however, the similarities quickly fade. The Liberace-inspired décor is supplemented with bulbous chandeliers, a large (muted) flat-screen TV and slightly incongruous fantasy artworks on the walls. And you can, should you wish (and if you can gather 20 to 35 people) take your drink downstairs to the ‘Dragon Den’, a student-oriented room-for-hire. For £6 per person (£8 at weekends) you can spend the evening playing pool, using the Wii or PS3 – and there’s a finger buffet thrown in, too. It won’t be everyone’s idea of fun, but situated midway between Pollock Halls and George Square, perhaps Michael Yip will snare the customer base at which he has so carefully aimed.

• Low point: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on the TV. Muted, fortunately.
