Something of an institution in the Shore area, Skippers remains a gem of a place for lovers of fresh Scottish seafood and casual dining. Choose from a wide selection of Scottish beers to sup while contemplating the eclectic mix of fishing memorabilia and pictures of olde Edinburgh adorning the walls. The restaurant is a maze-like series of interconnecting rooms, each with a different character: cosy, snug-type areas for secret assignations and first dates; a bright, airy room for family groups or lunch with friends; and a delightful outside area (complete with petanque pitch), which must be a magnet for locals on sunny summer days. The menu is packed with fresh, well-sourced Scottish fish – provenance and seasonality play important roles here. You can't go wrong with a pot of mussels, served in a classic marinière style or with a zingy Thai green curry sauce. A risotto of smoked haddock with lemon and thyme is heady with fresh parmesan, perfectly seasoned and with just the right balance of cream to render it satisfying but not stodgy. Skippers is clearly comfortable in itself, and the people of Edinburgh should be glad of its existence.
- High point: Fabulous Scottish produce in comfortable, welcoming surroundings
- Low point: Rare are the days when it's warm enough to dine outside

I am Scottish born and I am accompanying a group of Italians to Edinburgh this month. We would like to know if it's possible to book for about 27 people on Friday 20th March...
Thanks,
Anne

Great restaurant, nice ambience, friendly staff. My wife wanted lobster so I called in advance and they made it specially, without overcharging. Fishcakes were popular and the mussels I had to start were delicious. The drinks were excellent, and in particular good value compared to some other upmarket places. I recommend this restaurant.

This is one of my top restaurants to visit in Edinburgh and we have been a few times now when looking for an indulgent dinner. The meal always starts on a good note with fresh bread and butter which has been flavoured differently each time we've visited. We always hope to be there on a night they are serving the butter infused with smoked salmon and wasabi but have not been disappointed by the others! The seared king scallops with a smoked haddock risotto is definitely my favourite with the mussels in a creamy shallot and white wine
sauce starter coming in a close second. Lovely atmosphere with helpful and attentive staff who are not overbearing. Cannot wait to visit again and would recommend it highly!
