Eating & Drinking Guide 2009

A 30th birthday is always cause for celebration, but particularly so when it belongs to a stalwart of the city’s dining scene. Having witnessed the Shore’s transformation from industrial port to culinary playground over the decades, Skippers has not been without change itself. The latest chapter saw the successful 'A Room In . . .' team take to the wheel early in 2008. On the surface, little has changed, the old low-ceilinged building retaining its cosy ship-like charm via the rich-red, wood-panelled walls and healthy dose of nautical paraphernalia. There are, however, signs that the kitchen has lost a little sparkle, with dishes erring on the side of tradition rather than innovation. Regular crowd pleasers like fish-cakes, oysters and moules marinière all feature on the ever-present 'favourites' menu. From the daily à la carte, a smoky trio of home-cured, hot- and oak-smoked salmon makes for a simple and generous starter. To follow, pan-fried halibut fillet fares less well: although the fish is nicely cooked, its flavour is masked by the accompanying glug of creamed leek and Arran mustard sauce. Those less than enthusiastic about their own 30th year approaching may be cheered to know that, along with a set-price evening menu, one of the many celebratory deals planned for 2009 is a discount for fellow birthday boys and girls.

  • High point: A well-located, long-standing Leith favourite
  • Low point: The creative boat not really pushed out

This is one of my top restaurants to visit in Edinburgh and we have been a few times now when looking for an indulgent dinner. The meal always starts on a good note with fresh bread and butter which has been flavoured differently each time we've visited. We always hope to be there on a night they are serving the butter infused with smoked salmon and wasabi but have not been disappointed by the others! The seared king scallops with a smoked haddock risotto is definitely my favourite with the mussels in a creamy shallot and white wine
sauce starter coming in a close second. Lovely atmosphere with helpful and attentive staff who are not overbearing. Cannot wait to visit again and would recommend it highly!

I have recently had a very good experience at Skippers. The venue is warm and friendly and the food is great, well prepared and tasty. The staff is friendly and helpful. Would recommend.

Great restaurant, nice ambience, friendly staff. My wife wanted lobster so I called in advance and they made it specially, without overcharging. Fishcakes were popular and the mussels I had to start were delicious. The drinks were excellent, and in particular good value compared to some other upmarket places. I recommend this restaurant.

4. Anne from Turin , Italy – 5 March 2009, 7:50amReport

I am Scottish born and I am accompanying a group of Italians to Edinburgh this month. We would like to know if it's possible to book for about 27 people on Friday 20th March...
Thanks,
Anne
