The Shore is one of those homely little taverns on the Water of Leith that brings a sense of olden times to the dining experience. A pleasant folksy bar gives way to a traditional snug restaurant with white tablecloths, black and white photographs, aged bric-a-brac and green candles casting shadows on the dark wood and cream panels. A daily handwritten menu captures the best of the catch, highlighting a wide variety of fresh fish and shellfish plus a few game and vegetarian dishes. From the starters, a fish soup comes as a light, rich broth in stark contrast to the creamy pottage common to most fish restaurants. The generous portion has a beautifully seasoned sea-scented stock filled with chunks of white fish brought to a perfect texture. From the mains, seared king scallops are tender and juicy, served with a sharp accompaniment of white wine and chorizo sauce drizzled over a nest of mashed potato, and finished with bright splash of lemon. A grilled sole fillet stuffed with crab leek and parmesan is resplendent in a bright green herb crust. The Shore excels in creating an unhurried vibe with affable, conscientious staff always on hand to discuss the finer details of the menu.
