Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

There can be few Edinburgh restaurants that have to turn away as many potential diners as this massively successful city centre honeypot. Tables at weekends are booked solid, but it is always worth trying to battle into their unreserved bar area. The Mussel Inn is something of a pioneer as it has been diverting Scotland’s seafood away from the fine dining tables of London, Paris and Madrid since 1998. They do it best when keeping things simple: heaving pots of mussels with a classic white wine and shallot accompaniment, and grilled scallops best enjoyed with garlic butter rather than the overpowering cheese and bacon option. The hot seafood platter is a major disappointment as what should be a signature testament to fresh fish and shellfish is lost amid a confused tomato and cream broth that drowns rather than enhances the ingredients. Service can be on the rude side of brisk, perhaps understandable given how busy they are. But if it's fresh seafood with a crisp glass of wine you're after, the Mussel Inn seldom disappoints.

  • High point: When kept simple, the fresh all-Scottish seafood speaks for itself
  • Low point: Brusque staff can make diners feel like small fry

Reviews of Mussel Inn (61–65 Rose Street, Edinburgh)

1. M2 October 2009, 5:01pm5 starsMussel InnReport

From the outside you could be forgiven for thinking The Mussel Inn is a bit too casual to offer decent food. In fact the Glasgow branch offers the same in more salubrious suroundings, but less atmosphere in my humble opinion.

Quite simply if you want a decent pot of mussels (the Morrocan kilo pot would be my recommendation) served in an unassuming and friendly environment, then this is the place to go. It's an ideal venue for lunch or a night out.
