Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Surely home to some of the friendliest staff in Edinburgh – where else would they scoop up a toddler on arrival and show them their goldfish bowl? Goldfish aside, the focus is on conjuring up well sourced, imaginatively cooked seafood. The bright, breezy feel of the waterside dining space complements starters such as steamed surf and razor clams with curly kale, ham hock and sherry vinegar or grilled queen scallops from West Loch Tarbert daringly tarted up with chilli, fennel and lime butter. The stars on an inventive main menu are Scrabster landed whole plaice that works surprisingly well with smoked salmon and horseradish butter, and a nicely cooked fillet of John Dory with cumin roast cauliflower and chilli. Non-fish options are not ignored either with Aberdeen Angus steaks, again impeccably sourced from Longnewton Farm in the Borders. Vegetarians can also choose from their own menu. The epic wine list demonstrates the flexibility that runs right through Fishers with the Merlin Cherrier sancerre an ideal accompaniment to the seafood, while the Stellenbosch cabernet sauvignon sits well with the steaks.

  • High point: From the goldfish to the seafood, steak and vegetarian food, nothing dissapoints
  • Low point: Can feel a bit cramped rather than cosy when busy

the place to go in Edinburgh for fresh seafood, affordable and in a relaxed setting. The staff are very knowledgable and polite, but not overly intrusive. A great way to spend lunchtime.

If you like seafood, this is the place to go. The food is cooked to perfection. I have been to this restaurant on several occasions and have never been disappointed. Enjoy!
