The Southside's Mulberry St bar and bistro exudes an air of style and class, with the sleek yet casual surrounds of the bar area offering a relaxed environment in which to enjoy a plethora of high-quality beers and wines. While wholly enjoyable in itself, a short stint in the bar's throes makes for good preparation before sampling the neighbouring bistro. Pass its doors and you're met with a smattering of low-lit, comfy booths and intimate tables, offering a setting that is elegant enough for romantic dining, but casual enough for group meals. As well as catering for lunch/brunch, the menu caters to a diverse palate, from Thai curry and sizzling fajitas to fresh sea food – a starter of steamed blueshell mussels in a white wine and garlic cream is irresistibly aromatic. With smart takes on hearty traditional fare such as the tender pork loin steak with good ol' mash and veg, topped off with equally indulgent desserts, such as the in-house speciality cheesecake and blueberry panacotta, Mulberry St offers more than its relatively modest confines would have you believe.
- High point: Lovely low-lit setting
- Low point: Tables can be a little cramped

Very disappointing. Rude manageress and cold main courses made sure it was an evening to forget.
Can't stress enough how awful our meal was. The first meal out I've had with my husband in over 6 months and to have it ruined by someone who can't accept when a mistake has been made (she argued that the food was hot). Would strongly recommend one of the other, better alternatives in the area.

Brilliant bar, have eaten there loads of times. Service, although it can be a bit slow occasionally, is always very pleasant and thoroughly professional. Food is well presented and always really nice. Reasonably priced too. Would definitely recommend.

Visited Mulberry Street with my wife for a romantic meal after reading the List's review above.
The meal started well with a pleasant starter and the waitress was very friendly. However, the mood soon turned sour when I had to send my steak back for further cooking. The clearly frustrated manageress brought the steak back and banged the plate down in front of me with no apology.
From this point on, it was clear that we were being rushed by her. We were further stunned at the speed with which she presented the check to us; no sooner had we finished our mains than the tray with the bill was again banged down in front of me with not a word spoken. There was no question of whether we wanted dessert or not.
Our night was unquestionably ruined by this incident, and therefore I would urge seeking an alternative venue for a meal in the Shawlands area.
