Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

Lock 27 has occupied a rare spot on the edge of the Forth and Clyde Canal for nearly 25 years, serving typical pub food and customary entertainment to a varied and genial mix of Anniesland locals, nearby students and towpath strollers. The opportunity for canal-side drinking and dining means it is often bustling, particularly on sunny weekends or when sport is on the big screens dotted around the horseshoe bar. The décor is traditional and smart, and a raised area of nooks and booths promotes relaxed dining. The familiar pub fare may not be as unique as the location but it is sure to suit every taste. A booklet menu offers an array of drinks (cocktails are nicely priced), appetisers, sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes, pizzas, pastas and crowd-pleasing mains such as haggis, fish and chips, burgers and pies – the steak version has chunky tender meat in a rich Guinness gravy under crisp puff pastry. Mexican and Asian dishes are also available, from nachos, tempura and pakora starters to fajitas, chilli con carne and various curries – great for enjoying as canal life slowly glides by.

  • High point: A fine spot to enjoy the charms of the canal
  • Low point: Rather dull accompanying vegetables
