Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

This well-established neighbourhood bar and bistro makes sense whatever the occasion. The intelligent, free-flowing layout means you can dine more formally at the rear, sip a cool microbrewery pint perched at the curved wooden bar, or snack and watch the world go by in a comfy window booth. The menu has a loosely Mediterranean personality – ciabattas, salads, pastas and crispy wood-fired pizzas form the backbone, complemented by some inventive starters and mains. A small portion of nicely charred octopus, potato and caper salad is a quirky combination. Pasta dishes are creative – firm rigatoni served with braised chunks of lamb and a mint-infused ragù is rich but avoids being too heavy. The mysterious ‘four vegetarian mouthfuls’ turn out to be a lot more, with couscous, falafel, salad and garlic flatbread piled high on a wooden board, which means the delicious spicy dipping sauce is all too quickly mopped up. Children really are welcome here and will be kept busy pressing their noses against the huge fish tank between completing the puzzles provided on the affordable kids menu.

  • High point: Stylish but relaxed and family-friendly dining
  • Low point: Measly bowl of dipping sauce

Reviews of Firebird (1321 Argyle Street, Glasgow)

8. Le Haw, Yorkhill – 25 September 2011, 3:24pm4 starsFirebirdReport

Great pub. Staff are uniformly grand, good selection of beers, and the service is prompt. Music can occasionally delve into clubby nonsense but is decent overall. Good variation on the menu and the food is generally excellent, although the pizzas are nearly always delivered with a burnt crust. That's just me being picky though.

The only downside to the place is that its a tad pricey.

Used to come here all the time years ago, hadn't been in a while and returned about a year and half ago, was not impressed, seemed to have lost its way.
Thought I'd give it another go a month or so ago and was right back on form, booked a table for 10 and everybody's food tasted and looked really fresh and made on the premises, service was friendly and attentive but not overbearing - recommendation - crispy chrizo and chilli pizza from the wood burning pizza oven was superb with a great smoky taste, they also do these to take away.
Have been back a few times since and will definitely be back soon.

I havent been to Firebird in a long time, but friends told us we should try it again so we did. We booked for 15 people on a Saturday night for a pals leaving do. The food was great, especially the pizzas, the staff were good fun and attentive and to top it all off the DJ that they had on, had us all up dancing after our meal. It was a great night and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I would recommend Firebird to anyone, fast, friendly and very tasty.

After a recommendation by a good friend that we go there for food and drinks I was shocked and appalled by the quality of the food, service, staff and music that this Bar/Restaurant provided.
After entering the premises on a Saturday night which didn't look greatly busy the service we received from staff was terrible!, it took ages to be served and attended to at our table by staff with no personality, manners or even skills to do the job they were supposedly meant to be doing, same went for the bar staff who had a complete lack of interest in any of the customers there. The food lacked any quality, substance and flavour, looking more like no time had been spent on preparing the dish and it was completely thrown together with no skills required. At the prices this establishment charges for food this is a disgrace, absolutely over priced for the standard of food you receive, which as i am told this Bar/ Restaurants name was built on. The DJ on the night seemed out of touch with the bar and audience, playing a very bland musical selection which was also played far too loud for the environment!

I will not be attending this establishment again, nor shall my friends and would definitely not recommend here to anyone i know.

4. Sparky24, Glasgow – 19 April 2010, 11:53am1 starFirebirdReport

Slow, very slow service. Worst soup I 've ever had, I think instead of making more they just kept watering it down. Undercooked, over-priced pizza. No desert or coffee, as we weren't offered any.
I've heard it's under new management or ownership which would explain this as it used to be really reliable if a smidgeon over-priced.

3. Saucy Sal, Edinburgh – 25 January 2010, 10:39am3 starsFirebirdReport

Tasty thin pizza and good salad. But our plates were greasy and the cutlery was cheap , the glass table tops were scratched and smeary, the windowledges were dusty next to our table and I felt the whole place could do with a really good clean. I used the disabled toilet which smelt damp and mouldy. This place may look atmospheric in the evening but on a cold January day it looked depressing.

2. brassneck, Brigadoon – 29 March 2009, 11:51pmFirebirdReport

I had a meal in here two years ago. My rocket salad starter was garnished with one half of one cherry tomato. When I asked the waiter if it was possible to have mashed potatoes with my main course, he said he did not know. It did not seem to occur to him to ask the chef. I have not been back since.

Perhaps it has improved in the meantime. I do hope so. The food I got was well-cooked and tasty.

Highly recommended. Booked a party of 35 on a Sunday night, and we received excellent, unobtrusive service and amazing wood-fired pizzas, pasta, and salads at a very reasonable rate for the high quality of food. Solid beer selection and cozy gastropub atmosphere.
