Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.

Occupying two-storey premises fronting the ever-popular student stomping ground that is Byres Road, this West End wine bar attracts both students and slightly older folk to its cosy interiors. The menu concentrates on traditional comfort foods such as bangers and mash, steak pie or fish and chips. Among the lighter starters, carrot soup blends Eastern notes of coconut and other spices with the subtle taste of sweet potato. Crispy bruschetta is topped with little cherry tomatoes, finely chopped onions and fresh basil, all smothered in olive oil. Slices of toasted mozzarella can be added for a more decadent treat. Beer-battered haddock with chunky, home-made tartare sauce comes balanced on slabs of over-sized potato wedges, while, for dessert, a piping-hot sticky toffee pudding is reminiscent of the best school dinners. With a wide selection of wines by the glass, and a choice of squishy leather sofas from which to enjoy your drink or meal, this venue is likely to remain a popular watering hole and eating place.

  • High point: The chunkiest potato wedges ever
  • Low point: Limited selection of vegetarian mains
