Glasgow Film Theatre occupies a beautiful Art Deco building which opened in 1939 as the Cosmo Cinema. Early programmes were advertised as ‘entertainment for the discerning’ with the help of a bowler-hatted cartoon character called Mr Cosmo, and once the cinema was reopened as the GFT in 1974, the old name was applied to the café bar. The GFT remains the natural choice for the discerning movie-goer, and its welcoming little bar is not a bad choice for lunch either. For a very reasonable three or four pounds you can enjoy a freshly made sandwich, a bowl of home-made soup or a stuffed baked potato. There is also a small selection of cakes. Admittedly, there’s not a lot of choice but it’s good, wholesome stuff, and a lot more satisfying than the junk they sell in other cinemas. Beer from Glasgow’s own microbrewery, West, on Glasgow Green, is on tap and the coffee and cakes are excellent. Worth a visit whether or not you’re planning to catch a film – and a quick espresso here gives you a chance to see the lovely original interior of the cinema’s foyer.

  • High point: Fabulous Art Deco building
  • Low point: Limited choice of food
