Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

When the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum reopened in 2006 after extensive refurbishment, much was made of its jumble-sale eclecticism – a mash-up of stuffed animals and Spitfires, weird fossils and Impressionist oils. A place of uniting contrasts, perhaps. Continuing this theme, the KG Café occupies a wide, open space in the museum's basement, with stunning views across Kelvingrove Park to Glasgow University on one side of the room, and a massive Boyle Family sculpture of a Glasgow pavement on the other. The menu is every bit as varied and inclusive as the museum upstairs – from smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, to New York Caesar salad, Mexican bean soup and Goan vegetable stew. Portions in the main dishes are substantial, but for those with lighter appetites there is plenty to choose from among the various sandwiches, salads and savouries. The kitchen's quality consciousness shows in the roast beef sandwich, for instance, which is cooked to a rosy pink with a delicate texture. Others may pop in for a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and a scone. Families are well catered for: there's a kids' menu, and even free food for babies with every adult meal purchased.

  • High point: Cheerful and attentive serving staff
  • Low point: Haggis spring rolls?
