Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Sitting stoically in the hub of Shawlands, this landmark bar is held in fondness by many Southsiders who frequent it as much for its lively atmosphere as for its food. The spacious interior is airy (more noticeably since the smoking ban), teeming with a variety of people who appear to view this as 'their local'. The prevailing feeling is that here is a place where everyone does know your name. The food is not aspiring for gastro pub status, but it is wholesome with a British theme: a pint of prawns, smoked ham and eggs or a ploughman's lunch all feature. A chicken and ham pie with a creamy leek sauce can prove rather heavy-going, however flavoursome, while the beer-battered fish with chips is a solid choice, accompanied by mushy peas and tartar sauce. Although constrained by the chain-pub menu (it is part of the Mitchells & Butlers group), plans are afoot to grant free reign to the chef for daily specials, at least.
