Laid-back, traditional and situated in the heart of Shawlands, it's easy to see why many nearby residents treat The Granary as their local. The sandstone exterior gives way to a spacious, more modern room with flocked wallpaper, gilt mirrors, a smattering of large screens for the football and an array of wooden tables and comfy leather tub chairs. More importantly, there's also a good range of well-priced drinks. In addition, an extensive menu offers pub classics as well as some more adventurous Mediterranean-influenced dishes. The mushroom pepper pot – with large, juicy chunks of the fungus cooked in a rich pepper sauce and smothered with melted cheddar – makes for a hearty starter. Also successful is a large plate full of meaty mussels cooked in a herby tomato sauce with herbs and tangy chorizo. The hunter's chicken is a more straightforward pile of chicken breast, smoked bacon rashers, barbecue sauce and melted cheese. Dessert choices include a worthy reinterpretation of bread and butter pudding, featuring large slices of apple cooked in toffee sauce, layered with brioche and a sprinkling of sultanas. Daily specials are also available.
- High point: Extensive, attractive menu
- Low point: Not enough vegetarian choices
