Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Dating back 40 years, this tiny restaurant has moved from becoming a Southside local eatery into to a city-wide institution. The décor is dated, kitsch perhaps, and feels like a cramped film set for a 1970s film. This was Glasgow restaurant exotica once upon a time, with freshly dusted plastic grapes hanging alongside a selection of faded pints of Greek ruins. It’s clearly a place loved by its owners the Kyriacou family, whose mission in life is to fatten and befriend anyone who enters. There's a belt-loosening full mezze; starters such as smooth tzatziki, salty taramasalata and warm dolmades, a middle course of moussaka, Greek salad and meat balls and finally a variety of kebabs and a kleftiko stew. The moussaka is a good balance of spiced lamb mince, aubergine and tomato. It's quality home style cooking. The end of an era beckons, as plans are afoot to move to larger local premises. Hopefully the plastic grapes will move with them.

  • High point: Lovely food, good value and massive portions

The best Greek restaurant in Glasgow by far, with Cafe Zorba coming in a close second. The Vegetarian Dolmades are amazing and the seret sauce which pretty much goes on everything is out of this world. Dont eat too much before you go in as you are guaranteed large portions. The Greek sweets are a must also. I highly reccomend this place to everyone.

This is my favourite place to eat in Glasgow. From the genuine and warm welcome when you enter to the well swelt belly when you leave, it's a must for anyone who enjoys great homemade food in a relaxed atmosphere. It's very small with only 6 tables most of which are intimate booths where you can expect your knees to brush against your companion opposite. The decor hasn't changed since 1972 and you can expect plastic vines and pictures of Cyprus, along with Greek music on the CD player. It feels authentic and it is. It doesn't flatter to deceive but rather gives you it straight. My personal favourite dishes are the Mezze starter, which allows you to sample the hummus, taramasalata, tzatziki, keftedes and dolmades, served with a basket of warm pitta for dipping. For my main course the Tavva reigns supreme, absolutely melt in the mouth with a variety of herbs and spices. The main courses are served with a choice of chips, rice or roast potatoes - the roasties are not to be missed. Special mention to the moussaka and also for the huge choice of vegetarian meals which makes this a success with my vegetarian fiance as well. I believe they plan to open up in larger premises just across the road later this year and I really hope they manage to retain the atmosphere and honesty about a restaurant which is truly a gem in the Southside.
