Owned and managed by the delightful Kyriacou family, The Greek Golden Kebab has been receiving diners like long lost kin since 1972. Like eating in your favourite auntie’s front room, the atmosphere is so laid back you’d be forgiven for turning up in pyjamas. Given that only 28 diners can shoehorn their way in, booking is essential. Sure, the takeaway is some consolation – certainly for the pyjama party – but to miss out on the bonhomie would be a pity. As a starter or main, the moussaka cossets the soul, an emphatic touchstone of passionately cooked Greek cuisine. Olympic-sized rings of calamari, wrapped in a shiny golden armour of puffy batter, will spirit you off to last summer’s holiday in Paphos. The lamb sis – a Herculean skewer of char-grilled lamb, peppers and onions – is eye-watering in its proportions and mouth-watering in its tenderness. Tavva is a perennial crowd-pleaser, a surreptitiously spiced lamb stew that’s comforting on a winter’s evening and the ideal partner for a bottle of red on a long, hot summer night. This is the sort of recipe that the Kyriacou family will guard under lock and key. Everything else you are most welcome to.
- High point: Intimate, relaxed atmosphere. Great food and wine
- Low point: Must book in advance or else it’s takeaway

This is my favourite place to eat in Glasgow. From the genuine and warm welcome when you enter to the well swelt belly when you leave, it's a must for anyone who enjoys great homemade food in a relaxed atmosphere. It's very small with only 6 tables most of which are intimate booths where you can expect your knees to brush against your companion opposite. The decor hasn't changed since 1972 and you can expect plastic vines and pictures of Cyprus, along with Greek music on the CD player. It feels authentic and it is. It doesn't flatter to deceive but rather gives you it straight. My personal favourite dishes are the Mezze starter, which allows you to sample the hummus, taramasalata, tzatziki, keftedes and dolmades, served with a basket of warm pitta for dipping. For my main course the Tavva reigns supreme, absolutely melt in the mouth with a variety of herbs and spices. The main courses are served with a choice of chips, rice or roast potatoes - the roasties are not to be missed. Special mention to the moussaka and also for the huge choice of vegetarian meals which makes this a success with my vegetarian fiance as well. I believe they plan to open up in larger premises just across the road later this year and I really hope they manage to retain the atmosphere and honesty about a restaurant which is truly a gem in the Southside.

The best Greek restaurant in Glasgow by far, with Cafe Zorba coming in a close second. The Vegetarian Dolmades are amazing and the seret sauce which pretty much goes on everything is out of this world. Dont eat too much before you go in as you are guaranteed large portions. The Greek sweets are a must also. I highly reccomend this place to everyone.
