Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Ashton Lane - with its Irish pub, Polish vodka bar and Belgian brasserie - is arguably Glasgow's most cosmopolitan corner. Here, Cul de Sac flies the flag for France. The Toulouse-Lautrec prints, checker-board floor and red leatherette booths suggest a cross between a bistro and an American diner, and while they've binned the burgers in favour of baguettes, you'll still find Anglo-Saxon-friendly dishes such as traditional fish'n'chips alongside various interpretations of French staples. The niçoise salad is such a variation on a theme - a chunky fillet of fresh salmon instead of tuna - and with sun-dried tomatoes, boiled egg and haricots vertes, there are plenty of contrasting flavours to keep the senses amused. Likewise, the venison bourguignon is a departure from the classic beef dish: the stew itself is rich and tomatoey, if rather clumsily presented with a dollop of bland mash and a crop of salad leaves. The desserts are more artful. Whether the choux swan is a nod to the impressionists or the surrealists isn't clear, but this bizarre creation is exactly what the menu describes: a swan constructed in light choux pastry, swimming on a lake of dark chocolate.
