Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The original Two Fat Ladies, housed and taking its name from 88 Dumbarton Road, has been serving excellent fish-focused food since 1989 (and has nothing to do with the eccentric lady chefs and their TV show, which didn’t come along until seven years later). It's changed hands a few times, and seen the expansion of its parent group, but Two Fats West End retains its simple ethos of serving excellent local produce - predominantly but not exclusively fish - in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Decorated in a naive-opulent style of gilt and silk, the dining room stretches behind the kitchen and away from the shop-front window. With no natural light at the back, it may seem cosy or claustrophobic, depending on your mood. Simply prepared shellfish come in starter or main helpings, while second courses on a changing menu typically include sea bass, lemon sole, a mixed fish platter and at least one chicken or beef option. Dishes are clever but not outlandish - a well-flavoured fillet of pollack with a parmesan herb crust, sitting on a bed of creamy mushroom risotto, is a fair example. Desserts are a strong point, service relaxed and friendly as befits such an intimate space, and prices (a little lower than the other two restaurants in the group) extraordinarily good value for this quality.

  • High point: Great seafood in a warm, welcoming environment
  • Low point: It can feel cramped, especially at the back

This is the very first time I have felt compelled to offer a review of a restaurant. EXCELLENT!!! Scallops with black pudding were delicious, sea bass with Arbroath smokie was the best dish I have had in a long time and my partners boozy cherry, pistachio and almond dessert was to die for. If you are looking for top quality produce, cooked to perfection Two Fat Ladies West End is a must!

1. Let down customer, Glasgow – 23 August 2010, 1:34pm1 starTwo Fat LadiesReport

I'd always been told this restaurant was very good but I now feel totally let down. On arriving on time we were told there was no reservation for us despite the fact we had booked earlier that day. I eventually saw our name had been crossed out even though we were early for our table. I was given no explanation for this but let it go as they offered to find us a table. The restaurant had several free tables which made me even more confused as to why our name had been scored off in the first place.

Despite other tables being free we were led to a cramped table. The waiter seemed friendly enough but unfortunately the service was not up to scratch. The mussel starter was served with several mussels that were closed and therefor could not be eaten. The sole was served with a garnish of parsley that was burned black. The next day I had an upset stomach. I have no way of knowing if this was down to the restaurant's food but I wouldn't rule it out.

Given the prices are at the higher end of the scale I felt thoroughly disappointed with my dining experience. I would not recommend eating there.
