This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.
From the outside, Café Cherubini resembles a local café from a European indie film in which bookish characters sip coffee in the windows, framed by gold lettering and drawings of chubby angels. Inside, the couple in charge are wholly genuine with an air of nothing-is-too-much-trouble. Bohemians, babies and birthday parties are all received like old friends. The atmosphere is of a family home in Naples, with egg-yolk yellow walls, quirky artwork and even a customer guitar, should anyone feel the need to perform amid the fairy lights and candles on the mezzanine. The daytime menu offers value, and presentation is wholesome and home-style: choose from breakfasts, pasta and panini or seasonal salads. The carrot, ginger and coriander soup has a gorgeous, late-summer flavour and arrives with a full basket of bread. Penne ai funghi has ample peas and mushrooms, and is creamy without being cloying. Smoothies are new for spring 2008, as is an ice-cream machine to serve the 'Champion of Champions' Equis ice-cream. As this guide went to press a drinks licence was pending.
- High point: Warm service
- Low point: They should swap the plastic ivy for the real thing
