Perfectly placed for people-watching, Café Cherubini is a cosy spot for nursing a good Italian coffee or a cheeky Peroni. Decorated in warm yellow with quirky artwork on the walls, ivy hanging from the mezzanine, and service so laid-back it might topple over, in Café Cherubini you might just lose track of time. Home-made soups are prepared daily, deep, rich tomato spiked with fresh basil, served with a rustic basket of crusty bread. The caesar salad is a pleasing heap of tender chunks of chicken, whole rashers of fried bacon, and crisp croutons, let down by rather tired lettuce and the odd addition of balsamic vinegar. The signature dish is their own secret recipe Italian sausage (also available over the counter), served either in a focaccia with Gruyère cheese, with red onion couscous and a tomato sauce, or as part of the all-day breakfast. To finish, lemon cheesecake is fresh and light. For lively weekend nights, they are open until midnight, with a good range of wines and beers and an open mic night on Thursdays.
- High point: Deliciously coarse and porky sausage
- Low point: Limp salad
