Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The drinks selection at Home gives away its almost exclusive focus on the student crowd from nearby Strathclyde University: a variety of value shots and cocktails make this cavernous venue ideal for clubbers fuelling up before a night out. The large, booth-lined ground floor is littered with sofas, while a mezzanine opens during busier periods and is also available to hire for private parties. The décor is a mish-mash of styles: 70s retro prints jostle with an 80s colour palette, while a giant disco ball and a beaded chandelier dominate the space above. Staff have a casual approach to serving what is standard pub fare, such as calamari, steak and ale pie and scampi, which arrives with very little wait after ordering. A plate of nachos is crowned by salsa, cheese and sour cream piled in the middle, leaving the majority a bit dry. On the other hand, a 'gourmet' Hereford beef burger is lifted by an accompanying fiery horseradish mayonnaise and some crisp and fluffy potato wedges. While the food is perhaps a little basic, it's always kind on the wallet.
