Shame
Date Location
(5 stars) Brandon Sullivan (Fassbender) is trapped in his own world of sex addiction. Then his sister, club singer Sissy (Mulligan), drifts into his life and apartment, upsetting the precarious knife edge of his existence. Fassbender is stunning in a strangely lyrical film about ugly desperation.

Another Earth
Date Location
(4 stars) Sombre indie romance involving a planet beyond the sun which is an exact mirror of our own, even down to the lives of its inhabitants. Despite the loopy premise, the startling script by actress Marling and director Cahill is more interested in human interaction than space travel, leading to an effective double-whammy ending.

The Artist
Date Location
(4 stars) This joyous, impeccably crafted crowdpleaser about the advent of the talkies melds the tried and tested plot of A Star Is Born to the comic exuberance of Singin' In The Rain, with the result that it is almost impossible not to fall for its charms.

Coriolanus
Date Location
(4 stars) Coriolanus (Fiennes) is a valiant Roman soldier whose contempt for the masses causes him to fall victim to the city's scheming politicians. Fiennes, debuting as director, creates a modern day, war-torn Rome using Serbian locations, restless cinematography and an excellent cast, making this a powerful and resonant reimagining of Shakespeare's tragedy.

Puss in Boots
Date Location
(4 stars) Puss (Banderas) and Humpty Dumpty (Galifianakis) attempt to steal magic beans from Jack and Jill, with Hayek as feline accomplice Kitty Softpaws. Given the slackening quality of the Shrek franchise, the surprise is that this imaginative romp was one of the 2011's best animated family films.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Date Location
(3 stars) Oskar (Horn) is a precocious youngster whose father (Hanks) died in the 9/11 attacks; he finds a mysterious key and tries to discover where it fits. Despite radiant cinematography and a striking performance from Horn, it's a contrived tearjerker that is neither as poignant nor as profound as it might like to be.

The Iron Lady
Date Location
(3 stars) Lloyd's biopic features a brilliantly convincing lead performance from Streep, assisted by terrific work from the make-up and prosthetics departments, and makes some interesting observations about old age and the cost of power, but offers no significant insights on the lady of the title.

Man on a Ledge
Date Location
(3 stars) A disgraced former cop (Worthington) threatens to jump from a Manhattan rooftop, but it becomes clear to a police psychologist (Banks) that it's a distraction from a heist across the street. Leth nicely balances action, drama and humour, and a strong cast (notably Bell) lend more quality to the film than it probably deserves.

The Muppets
Date Location
(3 stars) When Muppet fans Gary (Segel), his girlfriend Mary (Adams) and brother Walter (a puppet) learn that oil millionaire Tex Richman (Cooper) plans to demolish the Muppet theatre, it's time to reunite the original cast. If the plot could be fresher, the well-chosen guest stars, self-referential humour and old-school bonhomie should raise a smile.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Date Location
(3 stars) On the surface, the plot structure of this limp prequel isn't a million light years away from the original Star Wars. At times you'd think there was more animation than live action on screen – and maybe it's this toning down of the human element that left the film lacking soul.

Cars 2
Date Location
(2 stars) Pixar's charmless sequel replaces the homespun values of the original with impressive racetrack backdrops, violent guns-and-missile action, and juvenile comedy from the belching, flatulent Mater. A mechanical slew of pop-culture gags indicate a considerable drop in the level of invention from Finding Nemo or Up.

J Edgar
Date Location
(2 stars) Biopic of former head of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover, touching on his alleged homosexuality and cross-dressing tendencies as well as a sentimental trip through the defining moments of his career. This subject matter is handled sensitively, and the film is well acted (especially by DiCaprio in the title role) but overall feels unfocused and lacking the type of authority that made Hoover himself such a formidable figure in American history.

The Woman in Black
Date Location
(2 stars) A young lawyer (Radcliffe) arrives at a remote English village to conclude the estate of a dead woman; cue lots of shoogly windows, creaky floorboards and slamming doors. Despite smart production choices of screenwriter and director, and a commendable performance by Radcliffe, the movie is dull, old-fashioned and decidedly short on terror.
