Another Earth
Date Location
(4 stars) Sombre indie romance involving a planet beyond the sun which is an exact mirror of our own, even down to the lives of its inhabitants. Despite the loopy premise, the startling script by actress Marling and director Cahill is more interested in human interaction than space travel, leading to an effective double-whammy ending.

(2 stars) Pixar's charmless sequel replaces the homespun values of the original with impressive racetrack backdrops, violent guns-and-missile action, and juvenile comedy from the belching, flatulent Mater. (2 stars) Biopic of former head of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover, touching on his alleged homosexuality and cross-dressing tendencies as well as a sentimental trip through the defining moments of his career. Jazz-rock is if no longer a dirty word, still a somewhat grubby one, but Weather Report were always the sharpest, liveliest and most protean of jazz-rock groups, and thanks to composers like Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius, they also had by far the best songbook.
