After 'Bend it Like Beckham', Chadha takes a step into younger territory with this adaptation of two of Louise Rennison's books. The film lacks the sharp wit of slick American comedies such as 'Clueless' and 'Mean Girls', but earns points for featuring actresses, including lead Georgia Groome, who really are the age of the characters they're playing.

The Devil Wears Prada
Date Location
Nice, twee wannabee journalist Andy (Hathaway) finds herself employed as one of two personal secretaries to the formidable Miranda Priestly (Streep), an Anna Wintour style fashion editor. With killer one lines, really well rounded characterisation and excellent performances, it's difficult not to fall for its myriad charms. Though formulaic, in terms of decent mainstream US films this year, this enjoyably innocuous, bitchy romp, may be as good as it gets.
25 Jul26 Jul Fri & Sat 11.00 Grosvenor, Glasgow
Donkey Punch
Date Location
Tammi (Burley) joins her two girlfriends on a holiday in Mallorca, only to be lured onboard a luxury yacht by some unscrupulous boys. Messy drug taking, DIY porn-making and a series of violent deaths by knife, rope, flare gun and outboard motor follow. A misguided British attempt to muscle in on the already hackneyed torture-porn genre.

The Game Plan
Date Location
'The Game Plan' follows the fortunes of Elvis-obsessed American football superstar quarterback Joe Kingsman (Johnson) and his estranged eight-year old daughter (Pettis) when she enrols him in ballet school. Hancock
Date Location
Smith plays a nihilistic superhero who has fallen out of favour with the public. Due to this scenario, 'Hancock' dangerously flirts with the status of one-joke film. Amazingly, though, Hancock is then rescued (both as a character and as a film) by PR executive Ray Embrey (Bateman), who believes he can turn Hancock's public image from zero to hero.

Date Location
Maggie (Faithful) is desperate. In her mid 50s and struggling with preconceptions that she is too old to do anything, until she wanders into a seedy Soho club and winds up being hired to give relief to men through a glory hole. While there is some humour in how this premise is handled (no pun intended), the film can't decide whether it's a sex comedy or a serious social commentary.

Adapted from Wendy Orr's popular book about what happens when agoraphobic authoress Alexandra Ryder (Foster) is contacted by winsome brat Nim (Breslin), whose scientist father Jack (Butler) has gone missing. Breslin and Butler adapt well to the frothy postmodern adventure but Foster's attempts at slapstick are embarrassingly crude and obvious, lessening any emotional impact.

A few years on from packing away the series, the characters are back and fleshed out, the individual angst of each woman realised enough to engage even the hardened cynics.
