Casablanca
Date Location
(5 stars) You must remember this … Bogart being impossibly noble, Bergman torn between two lovers, Claude Rains playing both ends against the middle, devious Nazis, a fogbound airport, a piano-player tinkling that tune. A wonderful hill of beans.

Shame
Date Location
(5 stars) Brandon Sullivan (Fassbender) is trapped in his own world of sex addiction. Then his sister, club singer Sissy (Mulligan), drifts into his life and apartment, upsetting the precarious knife edge of his existence. Fassbender is stunning in a strangely lyrical film about ugly desperation.

The Artist
Date Location
(4 stars) This joyous, impeccably crafted crowdpleaser about the advent of the talkies melds the tried and tested plot of A Star Is Born to the comic exuberance of Singin' In The Rain, with the result that it is almost impossible not to fall for its charms.

Carnage
Date Location
(4 stars) A playground spat between two boys causes their parents to try to settle their differences. There's little attempt to disguise the film's theatrical origins, but it plays out at such a blistering pace and boasts such exuberant performances that it's hard not to give in to it. Fast, funny and filthy.

Coriolanus
Date Location
(4 stars) Coriolanus (Fiennes) is a valiant Roman soldier whose contempt for the masses causes him to fall victim to the city's scheming politicians. Fiennes, debuting as director, creates a modern day, war-torn Rome using Serbian locations, restless cinematography and an excellent cast, making this a powerful and resonant reimagining of Shakespeare's tragedy.

A Dangerous Method
Date Location
(4 stars) Cronenberg’s investigation of psychoanalysis, seen through the relationship between the two main proponents, Freud (Mortensen) and Jung (Fassbender) makes for a fascinating insight into a moment in history when the world of thought, and the way that we think about ourselves, was being fundamentally reshaped.

The Iron Lady
Date Location
(3 stars) Lloyd's biopic features a brilliantly convincing lead performance from Streep, assisted by terrific work from the make-up and prosthetics departments, and makes some interesting observations about old age and the cost of power, but offers no significant insights on the lady of the title.

Man on a Ledge
Date Location
(3 stars) A disgraced former cop (Worthington) threatens to jump from a Manhattan rooftop, but it becomes clear to a police psychologist (Banks) that it's a distraction from a heist across the street. Leth nicely balances action, drama and humour, and a strong cast (notably Bell) lend more quality to the film than it probably deserves.

Martha Marcy May Marlene
Date Location
(3 stars) A young woman (Olsen) returns to the house of her sister (Paulson) after two years as a cult member. Olsen is breathtaking, but although Durkin is to be applauded for avoiding melodrama and pat resolutions, the film lacks intensity and could have used a little more narrative meat on its bones.

The Muppets
Date Location
(3 stars) When Muppet fans Gary (Segel), his girlfriend Mary (Adams) and brother Walter (a puppet) learn that oil millionaire Tex Richman (Cooper) plans to demolish the Muppet theatre, it's time to reunite the original cast. If the plot could be fresher, the well-chosen guest stars, self-referential humour and old-school bonhomie should raise a smile.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Date Location
(3 stars) As Holmes and Watson face Professor Moriarty, Ritchie delivers a rather sluggish and unwieldy sequel to 2009's surprisingly successful adaptation. But there is still much to enjoy, including an impressive box of CG trickes, the ‘old married couple’ relationship between Holmes and Watson, Stephen Fry's game appearance as Holmes’ older brother Mycroft, and Hans Zimmer’s jauntily atmospheric score.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Date Location
(3 stars) On the surface, the plot structure of this limp prequel isn't a million light years away from the original Star Wars. At times you'd think there was more animation than live action on screen – and maybe it's this toning down of the human element that left the film lacking soul.

W.E.
Date Location
(2 stars) Madonna's second film as director focuses on the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson and parallels the story with a contemporary tryst between a married woman a Russian security guard. Flatly acted and stiffly structured, the film's brazenly sumptuous look and gorgeous costumes give it a substantial entertainment value, even if the results are patchy.

The Woman in Black
Date Location
(2 stars) A young lawyer (Radcliffe) arrives at a remote English village to conclude the estate of a dead woman; cue lots of shoogly windows, creaky floorboards and slamming doors. Despite smart production choices of screenwriter and director, and a commendable performance by Radcliffe, the movie is dull, old-fashioned and decidedly short on terror.

(1 star) Advertising executive Jack (Sandler) gets Pacino (as himself) for a new cappuccino commercial, but all goes wrong when Jack's homely sister Jill (also Sandler) catches the great actor's eye and he inexplicably falls in love with her. Even dedicated Sandler fans will choke on their popcorn at this witless atrocity.

The Next Three Days
Date Location
(1 star) Crash writer/director Haggis' retelling of 2008's Anything For Her is not his finest work, with a disappointing performance from Crowe as a schoolteacher whose wife is found guilty of murder. The tone is confused and any potentially interesting rough edges are completely ignored, rendering the film remarkably bland.
