Exhibiting Surrealism: The International Surrealist Exhibition, London 1936

The dawn of British Surrealism was heralded by the International Surrealist Exhibition, which opened in London in 1936 to great public success. Organised by Roland Penrose, David Gascoyne and Herbert Read, with the help of French surrealists, it featured works by Dali, Miro and Ernst, as well as a number of British artists. The National Galleries will draw on material from the Roland Penrose archive to document the exhibition's progress.

John Muir Wood and the Origins of Landscape Photography in Scotland

Arguably Scotland's first systematic landscape photographer, John Muir Wood travelled Scotland by steamer documenting the country, as shown in these photographs taken during 1840-1860. Boucher and Chardin: Masters of Modern Manners
