Exhibiting Surrealism: The International Surrealist Exhibition, London 1936

The dawn of British Surrealism was heralded by the International Surrealist Exhibition, which opened in London in 1936 to great public success. Organised by Roland Penrose, David Gascoyne and Herbert Read, with the help of French surrealists, it featured works by Dali, Miro and Ernst, as well as a number of British artists. The National Galleries will draw on material from the Roland Penrose archive to document the exhibition's progress.

World premiere of a mixed media group show by Danish artist-run exhibition space DUNK!, representing a magnified cross section of Copenhagen's progressive art scene and providing a snap shot of the city's contemporary critical climate. John Muir Wood and the Origins of Landscape Photography in Scotland

Arguably Scotland's first systematic landscape photographer, John Muir Wood travelled Scotland by steamer documenting the country, as shown in these photographs taken during 1840-1860. Works by Robert Adamson, David Octavius Hill, Thomas Keith, Horatio Ross and WHF Talbot are also displayed to contextualise his output.
