Camilla Løw: Straight Letters
Date Location
This new sculptural exhibition by the Norwegian artist creates surprisingly light, boldly coloured pieces out of hard, functional base materials.
20 Jun–6 Sep Mon–Sat 10.30am–5.00 The Pier Arts Centre, Orkney
David Williams: Down with Gravity
Date Location
Kinetic sculpture and drawings from acclaimed artist David Williams.
9 Aug–20 Sep, not Sundays, Mondays Tue–Sat 10.00am–5.00 Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries
Frances Richardson
Date Location
In heavily-detailed drawings and the sculptures she calls 'walk-in drawings', Richardson examines the mindset of the compulsive gambler and the notion that the world's financial markets are built on anything more secure than just an extravagant, mathematically-abetted gamble. Such symbolism might be heavy-handed, but the work is articulate and impressively-made. 'Part of the Edinburgh Art Festival'
1 Aug–24 Oct Tue–Sat 11.00am–4.00 Corn Exchange Gallery, Edinburgh
Magazine 08
Date Location
Annual show of work by over 20 artists representing the contemporary Scottish sculpture scene. 'Part of Edinburgh Art Festival'.
3 Aug–24 Aug Thu–Sun 11.00am–5.00 Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Edinburgh
Sanford Wurmfeld: Cyclorama
Date Location
The E-Cyclorama is a painting unlike any previously witnessed. Painted on the inside of a huge cylinder, the viewer enters from beneath, is surrounded by the painting, their field of vision filled with a rainbow of shifting colour. 'Part of the Edinburgh Art Festival 2008'
25 Jul–5 Sep Mon–Fri 10.00am–8.00; Sat & Sun 10.00am–5.00 Edinburgh College of Art Sculpture Court, Edinburgh
A Shout in the Street
Date Location
Witty, subversive sculptures set inside an urban wasteland. Glasgow artist Kenny Hunter fills Tramway 5 with what appears to be detrius, a cityscape ruled by pigeons and feral cats, and compels us to reconsider the waste we usually avoid.
13 Jun–24 Aug, not Mondays Tue–Fri 10.00am–5.00; Sat & Sun 12.00–5.00 Tramway, Glasgow
Singing Stone
Date Location
An exhibition featuring recent work by Emily Young, one of the UK's foremost carvers of stone. 'Part of the Edinburgh Art Festival'
1 Aug–6 Sep Mon–Fri 10.00am–6.00; Sat 11.00am–4.00 Bourne Fine Art, Edinburgh
What is Life? Christine Borland, Graham Fagen, Simon Starling
Date Location
Three Scottish sculptors are brought together by a common interest in plants and scientific enquiry. There's immediate pleasure to be had in the understated humour that particularly marks Fagen and Starling's work, but the longer-lasting value is to be found in the way all three approach artistic enquiry.
