John Muir Wood and the Origins of Landscape Photography in Scotland

Arguably Scotland's first systematic landscape photographer, John Muir Wood travelled Scotland by steamer documenting the country, as shown in these photographs taken during 1840-1860. Works by Robert Adamson, David Octavius Hill, Thomas Keith, Horatio Ross and WHF Talbot are also displayed to contextualise his output.

In his photographs, Norman McBeath reveals what it is that all these cities have in common ? the sense of the unexpected and the bizarre, the unexplained and the unexplainable in the drama of everyday urban life.
