Expanding Horizons: Giovanni Battista Lusieri and the Panoramic Landscape
Date Location
Lusieri (1754–1821) was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the most skilful landscape painters of his generation. In the first half of his career he worked in Rome, Naples and Sicily and after 1800 he worked in Greece, where he was involved in Lord Elgin's still-controversial removal to Britain of the marble frieze from the Parthenon in Athens. This exhibition features the best of Lusieri's surviving work. Part of Edinburgh Art Festival.

John Bellany: A Passion for Life

In celebration of the 70th birthday of John Bellany the Gallery is mounting this major retrospective. It features work from all periods of his career, from the early paintings of fisher-folk through the more expressionist work of the 70s and 80s that reflected the artist's battles with inner demons and physical illness, to his more recent richly coloured allegorical paintings. This is the largest retrospective of Bellany's work for 25 years and is a proud celebration of a major Scottish artist.

John Clerk of Eldin (1728–1812)

John Clerk of Eldin was a true product of the Scottish Enlightenment. A successful businessman, he made enough money to devote himself to art and science. He went on geological tours with James Hutton, became an expert on naval tactics (publishing the first major handbook in English on the subject) and was also an accomplished artist. This is an exhibition of his fascinating etchings.

John Slezer: A Survey of Scotland

The military engineer John Slezer (c 1650–1717) came from the continent to Scotland in 1671 and worked for the army surveying fortifications, but in the course of his travels he also drew a series of stunning views of Scotland's landscapes, which were subsequently engraved and which he published in a book called Theatrum Scotiae in 1693. This major exhibition shows some of the earliest images of Scotland ever produced.
