If you're going to break yourself by running further and faster than the human body was made to go, you may as well do it somewhere picturesque – and Edinburgh is certainly that (if a little windy at times). Participants run for a variety of charities.

A sponsored nocturnal power walk to raise funds to combat breast cancer. As an added bonus, all participants are invited to walk in their bras (and that includes the men).

Four teams of top jockeys battle against each other in a six-race showdown. The four teams are Great Britain And Ireland, Europe, The Rest Of The World and The Girls Team. There will also be an array of activities to keep the whole family entertained, from fairground rides to urban display workshops.

Traditional Highland games with massed pipe bands, a hill race, Highland dancing, heavy events, and much more.

The Dundee Cyclathon 2013, a cycle run around Dundee's Green Circular Route, will take place on Sun 15 Sep 2013. It starts and finishes at Camperdown Park.

A multi-sports festival featuring – you guessed it – seven sports. Those'd be rugby, touch, netball, hockey, football, volleyball and dodgeball, with a touch of music and fancy dress to top it all off. Watch from the stands or get out on the playing field(s).

An exceptionally scenic half-marathon route, starting at the city's Meadowbank Stadium and finishing up at the Racecourse out at Musselburgh. As always, there are a range of charities you can run for, with varying registration fees and minimum sponsorship commitments.

If you harbour visions of your kids pitching for the Red Sox one day, these weekly baseball matches and training sessions should help them hone their ball skills and give you a taste of classic Americana to boot (don't forget the hot dogs and potato chips). Ages 6–13.

Criss-cross your way across the city as an individual rider or as part of a team, and check out the sites of the city all bathed in glorious moonlight. It's a 50-mile course, starting at Holyrood Palace, heading out to Musselburgh, and looping back to Holyrood via the Royal Mile. Ride for the charity of your choice.
