Meadows Festival

Taking place on the wide green expanse of Edinburgh's Meadows, this festival is dominated by a vast selection of stalls selling everything from sweeties to sculpture. There are also tents set up for live music performance and workshops, and a family-friendly funfair. Samba bands, fire performers, local primary schools football competition, a dog show and more add to the community-based vibe.

CAMRA Aberdeen Grampian and Northern Isles Beer Festival

The Campaign for Real Ale's most northerly festival features a range of real cider, perry and bottled continental beers alongside its massive selection of 100 real ales from around the UK. Among the events in the 2012 edition is the Olympic-themed 'Thirst Among Equals' session.

West End Festival
Date Location
One of the widest-ranging multi-arts festivals in the country, the West End Festival seems to swallow the West End's entire cultural output for the three weeks of its duration. The sterling music line-up (which in 2011 featured The Horrors, Alasdair Roberts and the Fence Collective) and the carnivalesque Festival Sunday are especially noteworthy. On the final Saturday, The Hidden Lane Festival opens the door on the city's creative collective, including open studios and exhibitions .

FyneFest 2012

Located on a working farm an hour outside Glasgow, FyneFest is strongly focused on the local side of food, drink and music. Food comes from the likes of Winston Churchill Venison and Loch Fyne Oysters, with plans for a hog roast in 2012, and beer comes from both the farm's own brewery (Fyne Ales) and microbreweries around the UK.

Edinburgh International Film Festival

Now 66 years old, the EIFF is facing a period of change, with a new director at the helm and a reputation to regain as one of the most important film festivals in the UK. We don't yet know what format this year's festival will take, but expect UK and international premieres, retrospectives, short film programmes, panel discussions, live talks, educational and training sessions.

Coloursfest

Coloursfest is Scotland's longest running dance event and each year brings together 10,000 clubbers and a roster of superstar DJs. Isle of Gigha Music Festival

Leith Festival

The Insider Festival

The Dundee Blues Bonanza

Largs Viking Festival

This annual festival marks the Battle of Largs in 1263 – the last skirmish between the Scots and the Norse.
