The Drums vocalist Jonny Pierce and guitarist Jacob Graham formed a musical alliance in their youth, solidifying their friendship when they met at summer camp as children. They played in various bands, dabbling in electronica before deciding to swap their synthesisers for guitars. Towards the end of 2008 they formed The Drums, writing and recording material themselves. They moved from Florida to New York, where guitarist Adam Kessler and drummer Connor Hanwick cemented the band's line-up.
