BBC SSO: Wagner's Tristan and Isolde Act I
Date Location
Wagner's Tristan and Isolde mixes up Celtic mythology and a rather silly extra-marital affair of Wagner's into a intoxicating but delectable goulash of doomed love with a generous dollop of Schopenhauerian pessimism. It's so famously strenuous that at least two conductors have died during performances. Perhaps out of concern for the welfare of Donald Runnicles and his lead couple Nina Stemme and Ian Storey, the BBC SSO has wisely spread this concert performance over the course of several…

Classic Ensemble: Bastien und Bastienne
Date Location
Every music fan knows a tune or two from Mozart's four or five greatest operas, but few realise that he actually wrote 22 of the things. Bastien und Bastienne was written when he was 12, and even then it was his third. It's an enjoyable piece of pastoral silliness featuring a boy and girl shepherd and a fake soothsayer, presented here by the Friends of the Music of St Giles' Cathedral and directed by Iain McLarty.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Così fan tutte
Date Location
Così fan tutte may not be the most hands-down, fur-lined, swings-and-roundabouts masterpiece among Mozart's operas – it's too cynical – but it's still more fun than a barrel of monkeys singing Handel. The plot is pure sitcom: young men aim to test their fiancées' fidelity, but it all goes a bit too well. Robin Ticciati starts the SCO's new season with a concert performance of this sprightly little number, featuring Sally Matthews, Laura Tatulescu, Rachel Frenkel, Maximilian Schmitt, Adam…

Scottish Opera/RCS: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Date Location
How do you turn Shakespeare into opera? It was all right for the likes of Verdi, who used translations; Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears used scissors, trimming the play into a singable form, adding one important line and generally insinuating the familiar Britten tropes of guilt and innocence. Here it's performed in a co-production with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, conducted by Timothy Dean and directed by Olivia Fuchs.

Scottish Opera: The Pirates of Penzance
Date Location
About Pirates of Penzance we're teeming with a lot o' news: it was written in a hurry so that Gilbert & Sullivan could open it on Broadway and finally taste those sweet, sweet American royalties, but in spite of its mercenary origin it's one of the best-loved operettas ever written: a crazily sparkling farce with a bumbling but patriotic pirate crew, some spectacularly inept policemen and a major-general who can't tell a rifle from a javelin. Sullivan's catchy and ebullient score matches…
