What in the name of the Grand Lodge of Antient, Free and Accepted Masons is The Magic Flute about, anyway? There's a boy, a girl, a lovelorn singing birdcatcher, a Queen of the Night, a lot of priests and more novelty instruments than you can shake a tambourine at. Never mind, it all works on stage and is Mozart's greatest opera, by turns heroic, tragic, comic, pathetic and profoundly daft, yet always fresh.
