What in the name of the Grand Lodge of Antient, Free and Accepted Masons is The Magic Flute about, anyway? There's a boy, a girl, a lovelorn singing birdcatcher, a Queen of the Night, a lot of priests and more novelty instruments than you can shake a tambourine at. Never mind, it all works on stage and is Mozart's greatest opera, by turns heroic, tragic, comic, pathetic and profoundly daft, yet always fresh. Here it's conducted by Timothy Dean and directed by William Relton.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Così fan tutte
Date Location
Così fan tutte may not be the most hands-down, fur-lined, swings-and-roundabouts masterpiece among Mozart's operas – it's too cynical – but it's still more fun than a barrel of monkeys singing Handel. The plot is pure sitcom: young men aim to test their fiancées' fidelity, but it all goes a bit too well. Robin Ticciati starts the SCO's new season with a concert performance of this sprightly little number, featuring Sally Matthews, Laura Tatulescu, Rachel Frenkel, Maximilian Schmitt, Adam…

Scottish Opera/RCS: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Date Location
How do you turn Shakespeare into opera? It was all right for the likes of Verdi, who used translations; Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears used scissors, trimming the play into a singable form, adding one important line and generally insinuating the familiar Britten tropes of guilt and innocence. Here it's performed in a co-production with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, conducted by Timothy Dean and directed by Olivia Fuchs.

Scottish Opera: The Flying Dutchman
Date Location
The Flying Dutchman wasn't the first opera Wagner wrote (that would be that not-very-often-performed The Fairies, if you can believe it) but it marked the moment that he broke away from the operatic conventions of his time and gained that heady touch of artistic megalomania that makes his work so riveting. Oddly enough, the first draft of it was set in Scotland before the composer decided that Norway was more Nordic. It's a wildly romantic tale of the sea, doomed love and a ghost ship…

Scottish Opera: The Magic Flute
Date Location
Mozart's classic tale of the search for love, wisdom and truth is also a complex allegory in favour of Freemasonry, or something, but you don't need to know that in order to enjoy some of the freshest, most exhilarating music ever composed. Nicky Spence sings Tamino, the questing hero, and Mari Moriya the virtuosic role of Queen of the Night. Ekhart Wycik conducts.

Scottish Opera: The Pirates of Penzance
Date Location
About Pirates of Penzance we're teeming with a lot o' news: it was written in a hurry so that Gilbert & Sullivan could open it on Broadway and finally taste those sweet, sweet American royalties, but in spite of its mercenary origin it's one of the best-loved operettas ever written: a crazily sparkling farce with a bumbling but patriotic pirate crew, some spectacularly inept policemen and a major-general who can't tell a rifle from a javelin. Sullivan's catchy and ebullient score matches…

Scottish Opera: Werther
Date Location
When Goethe wrote his classic 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther he had no idea that, after he'd got over the love affair that inspired it, been to Italy, written some very sexy poems and generally moved on, he'd be plagued for the rest of his life by mooning fanboys who wanted to meet the creator of the first truly emo hero in Western literature. Massenet gave the story a new lease of life in his 1892 opera Werther, here starring Jonathan Boyd as the poem-writing hero and Viktoria Vizin…
