Hugo Wolf's brief but spectacular career as a composer wasn't made any smoother by his sideline as a music critic; with hindsight, writing vitriolically negative reviews of any music he didn't like wasn't the best way of networking. Still, he left a sheaf of amazing songs as well as fascinating pieces like the Italian Serenade, here performed with Richard Strauss' Sextet from 'Capriccio' and the great Sextet No 1 by Wolf's arch-nemesis Brahms.
